Today’s devotion I sent to the survivors and advocates:)
Something that is often confusing for women in oppressive marriages is that things often seem to be going well for their oppressor, but not so well for them. This can cause them to think they are the one at fault. They think: “Everything is going well for my husband. He’s right; I must be the one doing something wrong.” However, Psalm 37 confirms that the evil can “prosper in his ways and carry out evil schemes”, v7. Thankfully, God gives us much instruction when this happens. In verse 3, we are to “trust in the Lord and do good…befriend faithfulness…delight ourselves in the Lord.” In v5: “commit your way to the Lord”; in v7: “be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him”. “And don’t fret when the evil doers carry out their evil schemes”. In verse 9 he instructs us to: “wait for the Lord”. Those who wait for the Lord shall inherit the land. What does land have to do with it?? Well, ultimately, this promise of inheriting the land signifies the final triumph of God’s people over evil resulting in a secure, peaceful end and eternal existence under God’s blessing. So, dear sister, rather than doubting yourself, trust in the Lord, wait patiently for him to act, keep doing “good” while committing all of your ways to the Lord. In time, He will bring you peace and blessing. Please let us know how we can pray for you and come alongside you as you wait and trust in the Lord.
