Today’s post
Lately, as I have engaged in my daily practice of reading a Psalm a day I have noticed, more than I ever have before, how often there are a few verses embedded in a psalm that focus on enemies…even oppressors and abusers. As I read Psalm 62 this morning, there it was again in verses 3-4: “…they take pleasure in falsehood. They bless with their mouths, but inwardly they curse.”
Sometimes, the survivors I counsel don’t think that God understands or that the Bible doesn’t speak to their situation. If this is something that you struggle with, or have thought, I encourage you to take note of how many times, especially in the Psalms, the writers describe the thoughts and behaviors of abusers. This may help you to trust God more that He does understand and that His words, in the Psalms, actually have you in mind.
Psalm 62 is one of my favorite psalms. “My hope is from him. He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken…my mighty rock, my fortress, my refuge is God, v5-7” I often share verse 8 with those I counsel: “Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him, God is a refuge for us.” It is common that when we think someone understands our situation; that they can relate to us, then we trust them more and we are more open to sharing our heart struggles with them. God does understand. He knows what is in all of our hearts. You can trust Him. Whatever you are experiencing today, pour out your heart to Him. Trust Him to be your refuge!
